Andrea Iannone ended up fastest in a rain-hit first practice session for the German MotoGP round at the Sachsenring, as reigning champion Jorge Lorenzo was among three riders to crash in the opening stages. The 45-minute session began in cool, dry conditions before the rain fell just shy of the one-third mark, by which time Lorenzo, Stefan Bradl and Scott Redding had all suffered falls at Turn 11.
