Marc Marquez injury update: 'Favourable clinical situation'

Repsol Honda has released the following statement regarding the medical progress of injured six-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez.

Marquez required a third operation on his broken right arm in December, when tests also revealed an infection that had prevented the bone from healing (pseudoarthrosis).

As a result, the Spaniard has been receiving antibiotic treatment for the past ten weeks and the latest update speaks of a 'favourable clinical situation' and that doctors were 'satisfied' with the progress of bone consolidation.

'A further review of Marc Marquez at the Hospital Ruber Internacional, 10 weeks after surgery for an infected pseudoarthrosis of the right humerus, has confirmed a favourable clinical situation.

'The medical team led by Doctors Samuel Antuña and Ignacio Roger de Oña, and including Doctors Juan De Miguel, Aitor Ibarzabal and Andrea García Villanueva, assessed the radiographic signs of bone consolidation and were satisfied with the progress.

'From now on, and during the next few weeks, Marquez will be able to progress steadily in the process of functional recovery of the operated arm.'

Marquez first required surgery after his arm was fractured in the season-opening Jerez race in July, then a second operation when the titanium plate broke due to stress accumulated during an attempted return to action the following weekend.

But the bone failed to heal, a condition medically described as pseudarthrosis, requiring a third operation and bone graft.

It is still unclear when Marquez might return to MotoGP action. The first official 2021 pre-season test is scheduled for Qatar in early March.
