Argentine MotoGP 'still possible'

The Argentine round of the 2020 MotoGP World Championship was among the early events shifted to a later date, due to the coronavirus.

Termas de Rio Hondo had been due to host round four of the season on April 17-19, but was moved to become the penultimate round on November 20-22, where it currently remains.

But while MotoGP has submitted a proposal to start at Jerez in July and is aiming for a total of 10-12 European races (counting repeat visits to the same circuit) a question mark currently hangs over whether there will be any 'flyaway' races this season.

Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta recently stated that, while the European events are set to be behind closed-doors, Asian races would only be possible if spectators can be present, due to the added costs.

No mention was made of the US or Argentina rounds, which run back-to-back, but speaking to EL LIBERAL, Ezpeleta declared:

"Of course, we [maintain] the possibility of running in Argentina. We have a contract and we hope to be able to close a date together with the relevant authorities and the promoter."

He added: "Racing at Termas behind closed-doors or with the public [present] is something that we will have to look at according to the authorities at the right time."

Organisers of the Argentine round have signalled their intentions to hold a race by offering a 15% discount on tickets for the Termas MotoGP, until the end of May. The event date listed on the ticket promo remains November 20-22.
