Smith edges out Lorenzo to finish top

Tech 3 Yamaha rider Bradley Smith set the fastest time of Friday's practice sessions at Le Mans for the fifth round of the MotoGP series before crashing out moments later. Smith was already comfortably within the top on the medium tyres, but switched to the softs with 10 minutes remaining in the session. During his final salvo, he posted a time of 1m 33.179s, 0.19s of the next best of Jorge Lorenzo, as both riders went below Marc Marquez’ track record from 12 months ago. Bizarrely, Smith fell at turn 13 shortly afterwards when following Aleix Espargaro, who also went down on that part of the circuit. Moments earlier Pol Espargaro had gone down at turn nine.
